Barry was born in New York, grew up in Miami, and moved to San Francisco in 1974. He studied film and animation at SF State and he graduated from SFAI with a BFA in 1986. He was twice awarded an artist-in-residence grant from the California Arts Council, and his work was exhibited at the Stephen Wirtz Gallery, sponsored by Visual Aid; at the Matrix Gallery, University Art Museum in Berkeley, in Group Material's "AIDS Timeline;" and at Nexus Gallery.
